Taste Profile

Our 2018 Clone 667 Pinot Noir opens with a savory aromatic mix of bramble, spice, damp oak and chocolate, while the flavors show ripe plum and dried herbs with a rich, oily mouthfeel, and finishes balanced with lingering oak and spice flavors.

Vineyard

Davis Bynum wines showcase terroir, differences in flavor from distinct sites in the Russian River Valley. The Clone 667 Pinot comes from a small parcel growing at our Jane's vineyard, in a neighborhood called the Santa Rosa Plains in the heart of the Russian River Valley. The Clone 667 vine rows are oriented east and west so the grapes get more sun on the south side than on the north, and consequently the picking decision is about finding the balance. Warm days allow the fruit to ripen while the cool nights allow the vines retain acidity, which makes the Russian River Valley a world class winegrowing region.

Style

We hand-picked this block of Pinot Noir clone 667, which is always one of my favorites, and filled three small tanks with destemmed fruit. As fermentation progressed, it became obvious that this one was particularly high quality. The sugar tested a little higher in this tank, and the consequent richness and fruit development expressed as a classic example of what clone 667 can be. Select yeast added fruit and mouthfeel nuances during primary fermentation, while the native malolactic fermentation added additional complexity. Fermentation took about 11 days, while an extra 5 days on the skins provided supple tannin structure and balance, which is the core of our desired style.

The Harvest
The temperature during the 2018 growing season was very mild with low precipitation, only 23 inches of rain. Only nine days over 90F were recorded and none over 100F. Picking started a week later than it did for the much warmer 2017 vintage. Very cool and overcast mornings predominated early September and our harvest as we hand-picked the grapes in the early morning of September 11.
