Taste Profile

The Gravel Lens Chardonnay has showy sweet floral and tropical aromas with peach, green apple, golden apple, hay, quince, and vanilla cream. The body leans on rich with vanilla, baking spice and caramel cream flavors on a balanced apple and toasty oak finish. It has richness in the mouth and finishes fresh. Enjoy this Chardonnay with creamy cheeses, butternut squash ravioli or simply on its own.

Vineyard

The River West Vineyard is located on Westside Road on a low riverside bench in the far northern end of the Russian River Valley. The soil is predominantly Yolo sandy silt loam with a pocket of gravelly Cortina soil. One particular block of Chardonnay planted to the Spring Mountain selection Chardonnay, has been one of the perennial favorites, a centerpiece of our River West Chardonnay bottling. Certain spots in the vineyard contain gravel lenses - areas where the Russian River deposited larger amounts of gravel than in other areas and which, over time, were hidden by soil eroded from the nearby hillsides. Subsequently, the gravel lenses are where the vines produce lower yields and exceptional quality fruit.

Style

Fermentation was done in barrel, 40% new medium long toast French oak barrels, and 60% old French oak barrels. It underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged 13 months sur-lie with monthly bâtonnage. Our desire is to strike a balance between the fresh aromas and acidity and the creamy texture and flavors from the barrel fermentation and aging. The resulting slight haze is due to the wine being unfined and unfiltered

The Harvest
The 2018 growing season was fairly dry through spring with lower than average rainfall. Cooler weather dominated this vintage with only two brief and relatively mild hat spikes, making summer days pleasant throughout Sonoma County with highs in the 70s and 80s. August brought with it warmer temperatures and scattered drizzles before the very best fruit was selected and harvested on September 18.
